Bears and Dogs

Bears and Dogs

The recent killing of a dog in Prince George is indeed a sad case. We love our dogs and I am very sorry for this man’s loss. It is important to recognize that this man did carry bear spray but though deployed, it was ineffective in protecting his dog. Further study and analysis would help in the understanding of its failure to assist. Bear spray is proven to be an effective deterrent in bear conflict situations. Along with its proper use and an understanding of bear behaviour, encounters such as these can be a defused quickly without escalation or avoided all together.

Orphaned Wild Grizzly Cubs Need YOUR HELP NOW!

Orphaned Wild Grizzly Cubs Need YOUR HELP NOW!

Orphaned Wild Grizzly Cubs Need YOUR HELP! And they need it NOW.

Two months ago, on April 28, 2020, a group of scientists, conservationists and business people from Canada and the US, got together in many virtual ways. They had three goals:

    1.  to make sure that the three orphaned wild grizzly cubs, whose mother was killed by hunters in Alberta, were sent into a wildlife rehabilitation centre (in Smithers,B.C.) and then, eventually, be released in Alberta.
    2. To persuade the Alberta government to update the 2016 Alberta Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan
    3. To encourage the Alberta government to licence one or both of their black bear rehabilitation centres for grizzly bears.

The option for the orphaned wild grizzly cubs ? Continue their confinement in the Calgary Zoo until they could be placed in random zoos somewhere in North America for a life of misery in detention. Majestic. Orphaned. Wild. Grizzly. Cubs whose mother was killed by hunters. Relegated to zoos.

June 4th, 2020

There’s a big development in a story that we at CFAX have been following for about 5 years now, it was 2015 where a now former BC Conservation Officer was terminated for refusing to put down two bears cubs near Port Hardy.  I’m sure many long-time listeners will recognize that story, there is an update to that today. So, I have Bryce Casavant on the line with me right now, Bryce thanks for being here.

BC: Yeah, thanks and I really appreciate, a shout out to team CFAX that have covered the story for so many years and to the public who and the listeners who have supported me this whole time.
